Religious Education

Last week we had our final week of January term. BIG thanks to our volunteer teachers and assistants, who brought to our kids their special talents in music, photography, French, yoga, marine biology, improv, cake decorating, and more! Both kids and teachers had a great time, learned a lot, and made some wonderful new connections within and between our communities.

This week we start our winter term - please see below for specifics.

IMPORTANT DATES AND NOTES

WINTER TERM STARTS FEBRUARY 5

Pre-K kids will be in classroom number one, and will use a curriculum focusing on elements in their environment (animals, plants, water, air, light).

K-1 kids will be in classroom number two, and will continue with Dr. Seuss and the Seven Principles.

2-3 kids will be in the library, and will be working on the curriculum "We Are Made of Stardust," exploring their connections to the wider universe.

4-5 kids will be upstairs in Bolles Hall. They will be using a very fun curriculum called "Bibleodeon," learning about and investigating the Hebrew Bible.

6-8 kids will be downstairs in the Dickson Room. They will use the curriculum "Heeding the Call: Qualities of a Justicemaker" that encourages personal growth in qualities that counteract the marginalization of others.

High School age kids will not have a specific youth group. We hope that they will join the 6-8 kids when they can, to show some leadership and engage with them in their process of learning.

NEXT SUNDAY IS CHOCOLATE COMMUNION AND CHOCOLATE SUNDAY!!!

As always, children will start in the sanctuary and join the adults in chocolate communion. This year, we are also fortunate to be able to host a First Church tradition - Chocolate Sunday. On February 12 after the service (and just in time to find something for that special person for Valentine's Day), the RE committee will present a chocolate extravaganza, including chocolate and baked goods, for sale or auction, and beautifully presented. Members of the congregation are asked to donate chocolate goodies if they can - there will be kids roaming with sign-up sheets this Sunday during coffee hour - please sign up!

NEED ASSISTANTS FOR WINTER TERM!

We've been fortunate to have several people volunteer for winter term, and we now have all the teachers and most of the assistants we need. However, we're still looking for help on a few specific dates: February 12, March 11, and March 29. If you can help on one or more of these dates, please let Deb or I know.

FEBRUARY 26 - 40 DAYS OF SOCIAL JUSTICE BEGINS!

This year's 40 days of Social Justice begins February 26, when all grades will come together to learn about this year's project. Between now and then, the 6th-8th graders will be leading the process of deciding what project to take on. If your child has an idea for what we should concentrate on this year, please ask them to share it with one of the DREs.

COULD YOU LEND A . . . ?

Religious education needs a number of things for its curricula this winter term. If you could lend (for a few weeks) or donate any of the following, it would be a big help:

-toys that contain water, such as water-filled bath toys and games in which you press a button to make objects move in water

-clean plastic dishpans or buckets

-toys for water play

-clean dish towels

-flashlights

-hole punches

-a 60-foot length of strong rope

Also, we’re looking for someone to bring in a live fish for February 19, and a live bird for February 26.

As ever, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

In faith,

Marlyn
